about applying
If you'd like to apply for a character, you're in the right place! As of June 24, applications are now always open. Fill out one of the two forms on this page depending on the type of character you're applying for and post it in the comments of this entry. While you fill out your application, here are a few things to keep in mind:
  • Please read over the rules and FAQ before you begin to fill out your application—This will save you headaches later!
  • Check the taken and reserved pages to make sure that your character isn't listed on either (unless you reserved them, naturally).
  • Please check your application for spelling and grammatical errors. While we're hardly going to reject for a misspelled word or two, a large amount of errors makes us much more likely to reject an application.
  • Plagiarism is unacceptable. If we find an application has been plagiarized, it will result in immediate rejection and a ban from the game.
  • You may app ONE character per round, for a total of THREE characters in the game. You may have two characters from the same canon provided they have little or no interaction in canon.
  • If you're already in the game, all of your current characters must have passed the last AC to apply for a new character. If this is your first character, don't worry about this, of course!
  • When posting your application, please format the subject line of your first comment in some form of Character Name - Series - Reserved/Unreserved in that order. Do not link to your application.
  • Original characters are allowed, but their applications are judged to a much higher standard than canon characters. We want to make sure that the character and their world are thought-out and developed. This isn't meant to discourage such characters in the slightest, so all this really means is take care to explain the world your character comes from especially, since all we have to judge them by is what you tell us!
  • If we ask for a revision, don't worry! Usually we just need clarification on something before we decide on your application. If you are asked for one, you have five days to supply the requested revision.

IC
NAME: Your character's name.

CANON POINT: At what point are you pulling your character from?
AGE: How old is the character?
APPEARANCE: A link to a picture is fine! It's recommended to upload it to Imgur or a similar site to prevent pesky hotlinking images!
PERSONALITY: This is the most important part of your app, so take special care with this section. Describe their personality, and use canon to support this section as needed. While quality is of course more important than quantity, we're likely to ask for a revision if this section is less than three solid paragraphs.
PROJECTED CLASS: Which base class can you see your character having and why? This doesn't need to be more than a paragraph, but we just want to make sure you understand the class system and think about how your character will fit into it!

WORLD INFO: Explain the world that your character comes from. While we hardly want pages and pages of information, this does need to be a solid section. Relay the parts of the characters world that relate directly to them or have affected them the most. We're looking for evidence that this character is clearly thought out, and in absence of a canon, this section is how we'll be judging your character for consistency.
BACKGROUND: Your character's history/background. This doesn't need to be extensively detailed, but we need to know what made the character who they are today.

PERSONALITY:
Louise's upbringing was that of great wealth and privilege, and it showed in how she learned to deal with the world around her. Growing up, she learned how to play off of her femininity and perceived helplessness to get what she wanted, which fed into a slight sense of childish entitlement. She was bratty and extroverted, who was always happy to have things go her way and easily upset when they didn't. She learned how to simply be demanding enough until others around her gave in, especially to stop her whining or manipulative gestures. Her then-fiance, Saji, had been particularly the target of her assertive and domineering personality. She was possessive and underhanded, but always in rather immature, relatively harmless ways that were the result of her sheltered and inexperienced nature. She was also cloyingly sweet, playful, but also a very genuine person who was free with her affections and had a great sense of family and friendship.

Louise's sheltered nature made her a perfect target for manipulation after she had experienced the trauma of a senseless terrorist attack. During a wedding, Louise's entire family was wiped out without meaning by Nena Trinity, who was simply letting off steam and acting on envy of the privileged lifestyle that Louise's family enjoyed while others fought in a war. Louise was injured in the attack, losing part of her arm and facing particle-poisoning from the explosions of the attack. Louise's sense of identity became compromised and her newfound disability lowered her self-worth, and she quickly became lost. Paired with severe mental trauma and grief, Louise pushed away the only people left close to her and denied herself any sense of normalcy that she knew she could not return to. Since her family had all been wiped out, Louise was the recipient of a grand inheritance, which would prove to be very useful as a funnel for funding military operations and experiments performed by the A-Laws. Louise took part in medical treatment to deal with the GN Particle poisoning, becoming greatly addicted and dependent on her medication. What she didn't know was that it was slowly changing the biophysiological makeup of her body for experimental purposes.

Four years after the attack on her family, Louise Halevy has become chemically compromised, both by GN Particle poisoning and by her addiction to the medication that manages her poisoning. This has changed her cellular structure and wreaked havoc on her body, both mentally and physically. Her mental illness and addiction drastically affects her personality and mental state, along with the conditioning she's been given as a soldier, so this will be kept in mind when discussing the many layers of her personality.

Louise's exterior is, first and foremost, the personality of an obedient rookie soldier that tries to elucidate an air of competence and reliability. Wanting to be taken seriously, Louise attempts to make people focus on the respectful, subservient nature of her military training, rather than her privileged upbringing. She seems to toe the line between being overly professional, and more quiet and anxious. She's often on guard, preferring to focus on whatever task is at hand and not end up being distracted from her sense of duty, or her own impression of responsibility -- be it personal or assigned by an authority figure. Louise often tries to remain stoic and calm, but has a rather obsessive line of thinking, becoming myopic and destructive when she feels someone is trying to distract her from her goal. If she's left unchallenged, she can appear to be quiet and kind, especially with her polite way of speaking and the due respect she shows. Getting close to her is another story. Although Louise is lonely and desperately seeks to be understood, even showing nostalgia for the way things once were, she is quick to act solely on defensiveness and paranoia if she feels someone is compromising her goal of revenge. She doesn't appreciate being dissuaded from her hatred, or people who try to coddle her and act as if they want to save something inside of her. This stems from Louise's confusion and lack of ability to reconcile who she used to be, and the person she so swiftly was shaped into.

Although she's very intelligent (she was a student in aerospace engineering), Louise has a very obsessive and paranoid mindset, so she's often quick to jump to conclusions and fixate on something emotionally, in spite of contradictory information given to her. This compulsory mindframe is something she has trouble controlling, due to her mental illness and severe trauma. Since she's very intelligent, but retained her inexperience, she's prone to being manipulated by those who play on her trauma. She has a very hard time coming to terms with justifying how the massacre of her family and how her own injuries have changed her, so she tries to think in a dichotomous viewpoint to rationalize it all. Louise pushes herself to her limits in battle, and shows a thirst for it. Slowly, her mind unravels in the heat of conflict and all that matters is her goal. She is a sick person who suffers from delusions, psychosis, extreme paranoia, and rage. She has a short fuse and can fall into despair very quickly.

Louise's old, clingy ways have given way to a despondent, loner outlook where she keeps most people at a distance. She's prone to depression and isolation, and is a highly anxious person, spending much of her energy managing her psychosis and trying to keep stabilized. She can sometimes appear apathetic, though she seems to swing violently between seeming unaffected and having an emotional meltdown. It is her emotional vulnerability that causes these episodes in the first place, and with that we can find the young woman she used to be. She hallucinates in regards to her parents, desperate to please them by avenging them and using vengeance as a way to keep them close in her heart. It becomes obvious when she achieves her hollow goal that she is terribly afraid of moving on, and inside is a person who is frightened to move towards the unknown. This is why she'd rather be absorbed into a bigger cause and given purpose. A part of her longs for what she can no longer have, and she fights against the idea of rebuilding something she could lose once more, or moving on from her past in any way. She's still very much able to form attachments, as she shows a kinship with Soma and comes to care for Andrei as a comrade, to the point where she becomes enraged at her comrades being hurt. She also shows kindness at her reunion with Setsuna, and a nostalgic attachment to Saji, though she's willing to become violent and turn her back on him if he tries to appeal to who she used to be.

Overall, Louise is a broken woman whose life has been hijacked by obsession, rage, and depression. She's ossified and has become controlled by her past, clinging to a resolution that will never come, and fighting a hollow battle in order to have some sort of tie to it. She is someone who had everything she knew and was taken from her in the blink of an eye, and never bothered to scramble for the pieces. The experience forced her to grow up into a stoic, loyal soldier, but in her maturity she lost very important aspects of herself along the way, such a her open heart and fun personality.

PROJECTED CLASS: Louise will be projected into the class of Knight. Louise has a rather desperate need to devote herself to a higher cause, especially for the sake of her vision of "peacekeeping." This includes destroying anyone who gets in the way of her ideal world, or who she brands as a terrorist. I believe her interest in nobility, dedication, and military cause stem from a need to protect. She was utterly useless and powerless to do anything to protect the family she lost, and so Louise has developed a need to protect both people and a cause with an almost frightening, unwavering loyalty. Her military training and respectful subservience is befitting of a defender.

Also, an ability that Louise has is that her artificial arm is far stronger than a regular arm, which I believe would be great for wielding weapons. I believe this would be fitting of an ability to wield a two-handed weapon in one hand especially. I think Louise's strengths lay when she is protecting, rather than on the offense. When she is attacking, she loses her sense of self and reality.

SAMPLES
FIRST PERSON SAMPLE: [ The device she's been given to communicate with is comparatively more simple in layout and straightforward in its networking options. It's a basic design that almost seems like a relic of outdated technology, but it's nothing that Louise minds. She was, after all, a very straightforward person.
It's the jewelry that it comes with that brings out her distaste. Distant, unreachable parts of her loved the look of the piece, and ooh'd and aah'd at it. Mostly, she decidedly resents it, for its impracticality and aesthetics. Why couldn't it just come as an implanted ear piece? Or a holographic projector?

Regardless, her message to the community is typed and clear. There isn't a need to put a face to it just yet. She is sending out a request, and just wants to know who can honor it. ]

Is there anyone that is willing to spar with me, provided we agree upon the circumstances and rules beforehand? My training is done for the day, but I feel unpracticed in close range defense against quicker opponents.

I'd also like to request the assistance of anyone with extensive background in hunting or scavenging.

THIRD PERSON SAMPLE

"Understood." Louise states, adjusting the positioning of her hold on her blade. While she had been extensively trained in hand to hand combat, ballistics, and piloting, weapons such as the one she held in her hand were crude and not anything she had handled before. Her eyes lose their steady focus ahead, shifting a quick and furtive glance at her trainer, then ahead again. The metallic glint of the sword's edge blares in the foreground of her sight. Her concentration was wavering. The trainer was unpredictable: masked, uneasy to read.

She interprets the silence as expectant, and swallows anxiously. Her grip tightens.

"I get it. My stance is wrong. Let me correct that." She says with a tightly controlled voice, rolling her shoulders back and positioning her feet at a wider angle. She stops herself short of turning her eyes to her trainer for approval, not wishing to look weaker than she already has. The woman before her begins to walk --no, pace-- across the field in front of her, and Louise fails to restrain her gaze from trailing her movements. A touch of insecurity in them.
Finally, the trainer nods in approval. It's slight, but a wave of validation and relief washes over her.

"It won't happen again," Louise reassures the trainer, realizing her heartbeat had become louder and quicker. Not now. She'll hold this in. It won't pass, she knows this, but she can wrestle with it until she's alone.

She just wanted to do things right. She was uprooted, and felt the ground beneath her feet gone. Without Celestial Being to fight and without the A-Laws to fight with, she wasn't sure of what to do with herself. Just thinking about it threatens to claw at her mind, dragging it closer to somewhere she's been before and doesn't want to go back to. She would do things right here, and find something to fight for. She would find rules to follow and standards to meet, because it proves she can do something right, and it proves that she's not as fragile and on edge as people treat her. Her vision gets bleary for a moment, but a couple of blinks banish any emotions out of her expression, and she slowly brings her arm back and sheathes her blade. Just as she was taught.

She would be good. She would be useful. She would make sense of this world and take from it what she could to destroy her enemies.
