about applying
If you'd like to apply for a character, you're in the right place! As of June 24, applications are now always open. Fill out one of the two forms on this page depending on the type of character you're applying for and post it in the comments of this entry. While you fill out your application, here are a few things to keep in mind:

• Please read over the rules and FAQ before you begin to fill out your application—This will save you headaches later!
  
• Check the taken and reserved pages to make sure that your character isn't listed on either (unless you reserved them, naturally).
  
• Please check your application for spelling and grammatical errors. While we're hardly going to reject for a misspelled word or two, a large amount of errors makes us much more likely to reject an application.
  
• Plagiarism is unacceptable. If we find an application has been plagiarized, it will result in immediate rejection and a ban from the game.
  
• You may app ONE character per round, for a total of THREE characters in the game. You may have two characters from the same canon provided they have little or no interaction in canon.
  
• If you're already in the game, all of your current characters must have passed the last AC to apply for a new character. If this is your first character, don't worry about this, of course!
  
• When posting your application, please format the subject line of your first comment in some form of Character Name - Series - Reserved/Unreserved in that order. Do not link to your application.
  
• Original characters are allowed, but their applications are judged to a much higher standard than canon characters. We want to make sure that the character and their world are thought-out and developed. This isn't meant to discourage such characters in the slightest, so all this really means is take care to explain the world your character comes from especially, since all we have to judge them by is what you tell us!
  
• If we ask for a revision, don't worry! Usually we just need clarification on something before we decide on your application. If you are asked for one, you have five days to supply the requested revision.

1) It's mentioned that Rion is mute for psychological reasons—Why is that? When did this come about? We would like a brief expansion on his mutism, since it seems to be important to the character, but was not explained.

Additionally, as a note to this section: "In Dyspros, he will remain an Innovade with the majority of his hacking/computer/programming skills unusable because they are technologically based. He should still be able to use his telepathy because the skill doesn't rely on technology as well as maintaining his physical attributes."

While he will remain an Innovade biologically, he will not have the ability of telepathy. Also to make sure that this is clear, he'll still technically have his hacking/computer/programming skills, but they'll have no use, since there is nothing that these skills can be used for in Vernesse. No problem - as I didn't think they were relevant to his characterization as a whole, I didn't go into it, and I think I can answer in such a way that explains both in one explanation!

Rion consciously doesn't know why he's mute. He's aware that he is; attempts for him to speak don't work, of course, but all the doctors' tests and whatnot show that he should be able to. It's not as if there's anything wrong with his vocal cords or anything like that, and it actually makes him a little bit more anxious; that something's wrong with him in the head, that he can't get things out.

Suffice it to say that he can't talk, and it stifles his interactions with people. He has a marked preference for being able to type with people, or sign; his mother actually picked up signing for him after finding out he was (apparently) mute, and that's his preferred form of communication. He'll write if he has to, but he sees it as being kind of a pain in the ass for other people, which makes him just not want to interact with them since he doesn't want to inflict himself on other people. Text, again, is easier for him because they're both working on the same medium, and he's much more likely to be forthcoming and... social with that.

The reason he's psychologically mute is because Rion is someone who's capable of using magic; he's just unaware of it! He doesn't know much of what happened at his birth home, but he wasn't taken care of very well at all. There was a lot of screaming and fighting in his birth home, and a lack of care, a lack of being fed, a lack of time to sleep. It was basically exactly the kind of home you don't want to grow up in, and as a kid the stress of such a situation set off his powers...

...his powers being the ability to basically "scream" and channel magic through that into a kinetic force; if you're familiar with DC Comics the closest analogue to it would be Black Canary's Canary Cry, which is a sonic scream that stuns/incapacitates people. Rion's is pure magic rather than a sonic energy, but he hurt some people really badly with it, leading to him being dropped the fuck off somewhere else where his birth parents didn't have to deal with him. He doesn't have any idea that this is a thing he did, consciously, but it's why he can't talk; some deep-seated part of him is afraid of opening his mouth for fear of Breaking Things again.

Other than that, the role of magic is one that's going to matter eventually, but for purposes of Rion outside of that power set (which won't come up in Dyspros) it gives him one more thing to wish and fantasize about; he wishes he was something special like that, like he had some sort of power so people would notice him, because even if he's tiny, even if he's unliked -- if he were a magus, it'd be different. But (as far as he knows) he's not.
