about applying
If you'd like to apply for a character, you're in the right place! As of June 24, applications are now always open. Fill out one of the two forms on this page depending on the type of character you're applying for and post it in the comments of this entry. While you fill out your application, here are a few things to keep in mind:

• Please read over the rules and FAQ before you begin to fill out your application—This will save you headaches later!
  
• Check the taken and reserved pages to make sure that your character isn't listed on either (unless you reserved them, naturally).
  
• Please check your application for spelling and grammatical errors. While we're hardly going to reject for a misspelled word or two, a large amount of errors makes us much more likely to reject an application.
  
• Plagiarism is unacceptable. If we find an application has been plagiarized, it will result in immediate rejection and a ban from the game.
  
• You may app ONE character per round, for a total of THREE characters in the game. You may have two characters from the same canon provided they have little or no interaction in canon.
  
• If you're already in the game, all of your current characters must have passed the last AC to apply for a new character. If this is your first character, don't worry about this, of course!
  
• When posting your application, please format the subject line of your first comment in some form of Character Name - Series - Reserved/Unreserved in that order. Do not link to your application.
  
• Original characters are allowed, but their applications are judged to a much higher standard than canon characters. We want to make sure that the character and their world are thought-out and developed. This isn't meant to discourage such characters in the slightest, so all this really means is take care to explain the world your character comes from especially, since all we have to judge them by is what you tell us!
  
• If we ask for a revision, don't worry! Usually we just need clarification on something before we decide on your application. If you are asked for one, you have five days to supply the requested revision.

PERSONALITY:
"If someone tells me that it's wrong to hope, I'll tell them they're wrong every time."

For a girl who has so much potential, Madoka Kaname is someone who looks down on herself a lot.

At the start of the series, Madoka is an average 14 year old girl who only had mundane things to worry about – grades, friends, love letters and the likes. Her life was incredibly average as she lived with her successful mother, her stay at home father and her baby brother. While it was mundane and average, Madoka enjoyed it for the most part, until one faithful day she met a girl trying to kill some weird creature.

From her child-like appearance, it’s safe to say that Madoka is a gentle and friendly girl who would give up her soul to protect others – literally. Due to being a young teenager, Madoka is rather naïve when it comes to growing up, often asking her mother for advice, and she’s rather naïve about the truth of magical girls. She may show signs of naiveness, she isn’t dumb. She’s certainly not the type of girl to rush into things, and usually makes level-headed decisions about certain things, such as what her wish should be. While Mami Tomoe says she should make a wish for herself quickly, Madoka prefers to have more time to think it over. She was able to act fast by taking out a violent Mami in the third timeline when she was about to kill Homura. She may make some level-headed choices, but even Madoka can make some bad choices, such as throwing Sayaka’s soul gem away and caused her body to become comatose (to be fair, she had no idea that would happen, since no one knew what soulgems truly were).

While she does show signs of being naïve, Madoka does have an understanding of humanity. She states to Kyuubey that “even though Incubators have a good reason for collecting energy, they are still humanity’s enemy”, because Incubators use humans for their own good. Madoka has the mentality to deal with the truth and does not fall into despair easily unlike her best friends, who fell slowly into despair and turned into a witch (Sayaka), and who tried to kill all the other girls to make sure they never suffer the terrible fate of becoming a witch (Mami), making her a good representation of hope.

Madoka is a good girl – never causing any trouble, is the aid for the nurse, and is simply quiet. She treats others with respect and gentle care. As stated by her mother, she “never lies and doesn’t do anything bad”. She’s “always doing the right thing” as well, even if she has to make some sacrifices along the way. She is the first one to show kindness towards Homura Akemi, the new transfer student, and would sacrifice herself for her best friend Sayaka Miki if she ever got into any trouble.

While she’s friendly and open to people, the young middle school is rather shy around people. It’s shown that she’s more open and outgoing around other girls her age, calling them by their first name and adding a cute honorific, such as “-chan” or “-san” at the end. When it comes to males, she simply calls them by their family name, attaching the honorific of “-kun”. She tends to get flustered about things easily, such as when Mami and Sayaka gave a friendly laugh at her cute doodles of her as a magical girl and when Sayaka said she would make Madoka her wife.

Madoka may give off the energy of being happy with her life and self, she is shown to have low-confidence with herself. She believes that by being average, she thinks of herself as a burden and useless, not contributing much to society. Her mindset is by being a magical girl, she can do more to help people and not feel so useless. Really, she wants to be a magical girl for the sake of being one, and for the sake of not feeling so useless. It’s shown that when she becomes a magical girl in the previous timelines, she has much more confidence in herself.

And yet, despite her insecurities Madoka is a girl of hope. She often says that "If someone tells me that it's wrong to hope, I'll tell them they're wrong every time”, knowing that there is always room for hope and positive wishing. This leads her to becoming a powerful deity and withstanding the amount of despair she has to take in the final episode, when she makes her selfless wish of wishing for the end of despair for all magical girls. Madoka is a selfless person, wanting to help others and use her wish for something good. His wish to save a cat in the first timeline showed that she cares for all types of creatures, human or animal.

Madoka’s relationships with her friends certainly impacted her life. In all of the timelines, she has shown a gentle personality to Homura Akemi and never once believed that she was evil. Even though she was a bit wary of her in the beginning, she eventually warmed up to Homura and viewed her as a best friend, wanting to understand her better. In the third timeline, she saved Homura because she refused to see her friend suffer the fate of becoming a witch and asked her to save her in the next timeline.

Sayaka Miki was a long time friend of her’s and was very close with her, causing their other friend Hitomi to think they had a “forbidden love” with each other. Madoka cares very much about Sayaka, worrying that she might suffer the same fate as Mami if she became a magical girl and even asked Homura to protect her since Madoka herself couldn’t do anything at that moment. No matter what, Madoka is willing to face whatever danger comes their way for her friend, accompanying her on witch hunts.

Her relationship with Mami Tomoe is something of a “senpai-kouhai” relationship. Madoka looks up to the veteran magical girl and believes that she’s flashy and cool, which pretty much caused Mami to show off in front of her new friend and caused her death. While they do have a close relationship, it’s not as close as the relationship Madoka has with Homura or Sayaka.

Then there’s the relationship she has with her mother. It’s obvious that based on their conversations, she’s very close to Junko. She often goes to her for advice, without mentioning magic, and usually listens to her mother’s judgment or at least thinks about it. They promise each other that once Madoka is twenty years old, they would share a drink with each other. Her mother is a huge inspiration in her life and she stated in an interview that she would like to marry someone as cool as her mother.

Despite having great potential, Madoka is simply a 14 year old girl who is still maturing and learning so much about life. She has her insecurities about herself, thinking that becoming a magical girl may be better for her, but in the end she is willing to sacrifice a lot to make sure that no one suffers and that everyone can have their own happy end. In short, Madoka is an image of hope and maturity based on her actions and characterization she displays throughout the series.

PROJECTED CLASS: Ranger! When she was a magical girl, a bow was her main weapon and it became something that fans identified her with. Not to mention rangers are described as “guardians of the weak” which is pretty much what Madoka’s character is all about – she wants to protect the weak and simply help people.

Hello…! My name is Madoka Kaname a-and I’m new here. I mean, I guess we all are new here huh? Anyway, I just wanted to introduce myself, seeing as we’re all stuck here, ehehe…

[ There’s a small pause. ] … There’s not a lot I can really do to be honest. I’m not anything too special, but I want to help people. I don’t want to see anyone here getting hurt s-so even though I can’t do a lot, I’m here for everyone, for support as well! After all, we can’t give up hope…!

[ Ah, that sounded kind of embarrassing. Even though she looked flustered about what she said, she still believed it. ]

I-I think that’s it. [ -- oh wait! ] I’m looking for two people: Sayaka Miki and Homura Akemi! They’re my friends from my world and I really need to find them. So if you see them, just tell them Madoka Kaname is here. [ They’ll probably come rushing when they find out she’s here. ]

THIRD PERSON SAMPLE
At first, Madoka was a bit nervous about being a ranger. The idea of fighting, while she would do it to protect her friends, was still a new thing for her. After all, before the concept of Magical Girls entered her life, the 14 year old had thought she would never have to engage in combat (well, her mother always told her to bring pepper spray – just in case).

But now here she was, reloading arrows and ready to fight monsters! Maybe this was a good thing for her; whenever she returned home, she could help Sayaka with fighting witches. She wasn’t sure how well normal arrows could work against witches, but apparently they worked well with fighting monsters. How different could it be?

Setting up traps wasn’t too difficult either. After learning a few basic tricks, she was setting them up like… Well, not like a master but they weren’t too shabby. They were average – just like her.

She took a deep breath, reminding herself that this was the right thing to do; fighting for those who could not fight for themselves. To think, she would actually be fighting as a normal girl rather than a magical one. It was still a lot to take in, but in the end she knew that she made the right choice. She still felt like she couldn’t do much, but maybe this would help her prove her worth a bit better.

I’m going to help people, she thought to herself. I will help anyone in need!

“Madoka, stop daydreaming already,” there was a voice from a nearby guild member, snapping the school girl out of her thoughts. She blushed in embarrassment once she realized the group was moving out and quickly shifted the case her arrows her held in.

“S-Sorry, I’ll be right there!” Madoka called out, rushing to join the rest of the group.

Well, maybe there were a few things she needed to work on personally.
