about applying
If you'd like to apply for a character, you're in the right place! As of June 24, applications are now always open. Fill out one of the two forms on this page depending on the type of character you're applying for and post it in the comments of this entry. While you fill out your application, here are a few things to keep in mind:
  • Please read over the rules and FAQ before you begin to fill out your application—This will save you headaches later!
  • Check the taken and reserved pages to make sure that your character isn't listed on either (unless you reserved them, naturally).
  • Please check your application for spelling and grammatical errors. While we're hardly going to reject for a misspelled word or two, a large amount of errors makes us much more likely to reject an application.
  • Plagiarism is unacceptable. If we find an application has been plagiarized, it will result in immediate rejection and a ban from the game.
  • You may app ONE character per round, for a total of THREE characters in the game. You may have two characters from the same canon provided they have little or no interaction in canon.
  • If you're already in the game, all of your current characters must have passed the last AC to apply for a new character. If this is your first character, don't worry about this, of course!
  • When posting your application, please format the subject line of your first comment in some form of Character Name - Series - Reserved/Unreserved in that order. Do not link to your application.
  • Original characters are allowed, but their applications are judged to a much higher standard than canon characters. We want to make sure that the character and their world are thought-out and developed. This isn't meant to discourage such characters in the slightest, so all this really means is take care to explain the world your character comes from especially, since all we have to judge them by is what you tell us!
  • If we ask for a revision, don't worry! Usually we just need clarification on something before we decide on your application. If you are asked for one, you have five days to supply the requested revision.

Here ya go, let me know if that works for ya:

[The communication spell focuses on Zoe’s sober face, the gem itself held in her hand out in front of her so there’s a good view of her expression, or lack of one. She doesn’t look too terribly pleased, perhaps, but then, she hasn’t looked too terribly pleased since she got here. Even less so now that she’s had to join one of those guild things, but at least that gives her access to this, and access to other people who aren’t from around here.]

So I guess we’re stuck here with a lotta bows an’ arrows an’ swords an’ the like. Guess nobody’s seen a spaceport or any ships to catch offworld?

[There isn’t a lot of hope in that, but she’s asking anyway.]

I’m from one of those ships. My crew’s gonna be missin’ me. Any information any of you might have’d be welcome. Anyone heard or seen anythin’, send me a wave.

[There’s a beat, as she remembers where she is, and then she adds:]

Or a call. Or a spell. Whatever you call ‘em here.

[She considers that one beat more, looking uncomfortable with the “magic” verbiage, then decides that’s enough to say and then turns off the feed without preamble.]

likemother: (003¦AGAINST THE WORLD)

[personal profile] likemother 2013-05-06 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
PERSONALITY:
In a world dominated by NEETs and hikikomoris, and where the male to female ratio was, to make an understatement, unbalanced, a particular girl with chestnut hair who smiled as brightly as the sun stood out.

Skilled, strong, and not to mention beautiful, Asuna Yuuki climbed up the ranks at an incredible speed, becoming a top level level player despite it being her first experience in any sort of video game. Retaining common sense and possessing an analytical mind even in the midst of tragedy, she managed to direct and commanding large groups, organizing countless expeditions into dungeons, and even becoming second in command of what was known as Aincrad's strongest guild, "The Knights of The Blood Oath". The amount of things Asuna achieved in «that world» cannot be measured, for she appeared to surpass terror and fear and became a guide for many. It’s no wonder that she garnered so many fans during those two years.

The intelligence and patience needed to calmly and successfully lead groups into battle and emerge successfully from them, and the grace she presented throughout it all, Asuna Yuuki seemed to be someone incredibly strong.

However, this confident, no-nonsense class representative type of girl isn’t all that she seems. Her past and the changes that occurred to her throughout her adventures in Aincrad are things Asuna keeps to herself for many reasons. In truth, the strength she presented in the beginning was nothing but her desperately attempting to survive. Asuna Yuuki was someone who feared a lot of things. She feared the possibility of a worthless life if she survives and she also feared dying a dog’s death inside a video game. She feared getting into trouble and she feared how much time she would waste dawdling about if she didn’t involve herself with things, while also fearing what would become of her and her life if she simply existed and never reacted to the things going on around her. These sort of contradictions halt her progress and leave her simply smiling and nodding at everything her parents told her.

Her stubbornness shines through here, as she holds everything in and deals with it on her own, sometimes even keeping it from the one who knew her heart the most. She couldn’t possibly call herself a «swordswoman» if she crumbled under the weight of her baggage, and disappointing that reckless boy who dared to call her «strong» isn’t an option either. But, the truth is that the warm-hearted Asuna who sacrificed herself for the boy she loved that we see at the end of Sword Art Online is, in many ways, different to the Asuna who played a videogame on a whim.

«Asuna - Yuuki Asuna's 15 years of life, were a continuous battle. It began with the kindergarten entrance exam, then with many small and big tests after; Asuna overcame them all. It was set so that even one failure would make her a worthless person, so she continued to repel that weight.»

Born to parents of high-class, she worked hard to fulfill their expectations whilst living in fear of them, or, to be specific, how they would react if she disappointed them. And so, she became someone who sacrificed her present to gain a better future, despite the fact that she feared being trapped in a predetermined world. Everything from her high school to her friends were approved by her parents, and for the longest time she didn't think about anything other than becoming a person of high enough caliber to please them. In fact, her being in Sword Art Online was merely one of the whims she rarely indulged in, and it was a decision she would mercilessly beat herself up over for a long time.

Originally, Asuna was one of the thousands of players that chose to hide in the town of the first floor. Controlled by panic and fear, she hid in an inn for weeks, often screaming and beating on the walls as she wailed. She wasn't a gamer, she didn't understand terms like Rare Drops or Skills. If things like video games were completely foreign to her, the new VRMMORPGs were on par with another dimension completely-- If that was the case, she'd be better off waiting until they were rescued, right? She had to get back home soon, or else she would fall behind on her studies. Exams were soon, if she missed that then her carefully crafted life would turn into shambles. However, after a few weeks of silence from the outside world, she lost hope, and realized that waiting for other people to get the job done would be futile.

«Instead of huddling in a small dark room fearing for the future, it's better to go outside. Use all her ability to learn, train, and fight. If she ended up dying after using all her strength, at least she would be without trouble for the past and regrets of a lost future.»

Once she becomes fully aware of the situation, she heads out with newfound determination to get this ordeal over with. Not because her life was threatened, but rather because her ideal future was in peril, and if things weren't righted, she would ultimately disappear into nothingness. Throughout the time spent memorizing the reference manual, garnering equipment, and ardently leveling up, she thought not of living, but of her parents discontented expressions as they thought of their child who failed midterms thanks to a video game console.

With a rigid schedule where she slept twice a day for only three or so hours, she leveled up by herself, refusing to party with, or even interact, with other players in a manner similar to Kirito; although for different reasons. Once she was trained to be competent even on the front lines, she attended the meeting for clearing the first dungeon, where she encountered Kirito and partied with someone for the first time. Here she learns that there are limits to what a solo player can do, and it would be more efficient to join a guild.

After defeating the first boss and learning that Kirito was a beater, Asuna's actions are hazy. It's assumed that she either continued to level grind until she was noticed by the Knights of The Blood Oath, or that they recruited her once they formed. What is certain is that she quickly climbed the ranks until she was second in command of Aincrad's strongest guild, and in that span of time she became extremely popular for her fierceness in battle and beautiful appearance.

Although, at this point, Asuna still remained the same. She still feared. Feared death and life and the realistic feel of adrenaline urging her on throughout the battles she experienced, for this world was a cage for 10,000 prisoners and none of whom she could trust. Every minute spent in this virtual reality was yet another blemish in her already tarnished life, because it didn’t matter how real the handle of her sword feels, the truth was the same: She was still lying on some bed in some hospital, and she will never be able to return to «that life» again. However, something unexpected occurred.

She met a boy who felt the warmth of the sun and enjoyed the breeze of the plains. She met someone who fought with everything on the line, who felt the frustration and troubles that all of them were going through, yet still moved naturally in this fantasy world. She was sure that he was the same here as he would be anywhere else. She met a boy who lived. On that babyish face resting under the shade, Asuna saw the answer she had been looking for.

Is this world real?

Does it mean something?

«"I realized that 'this person was actually living properly within this world.' He didn't mind losing days in the real world and instead focused on experiencing each day within this world."»

It does.

Asuna Yuuki was someone did not live «in this moment.» Looking forward, towards that distant future, never stopping to think about her current self. Her leadership and capable commanding abilities weren’t because of charisma, or her beauty. Her words did not inspire those under her command into action, but rather, forced them to trudge on, if only because of fear. Asuna Yuuki had become like her mother: cold in her relations with others, firm in her words and actions. She certainly couldn’t be blamed, and it is worthy of praise that she held herself together in that tragedy and found the strength to fight and lead, but-- That’s not how she should live. She wasn’t just sealing off her true self, but it was a very lonely and unnecessarily difficult path.

Her first intimate meeting with that «swordsman» marks the first step towards Asuna’s change.
Such things don’t happen overnight, especially when there’s 16 years worth of baggage to get rid of. However, Asuna learns to dream and smile without a cloud hanging over her head. Things like her family and future begin to lose their meaning, and while the pillars that held her crumble, she still stood tall and proud. That was because he taught her how to be her own person. It’s not the fact that Aincrad was her reality, or that it was possible to live in the present and have a happy future, but that the weight on her shoulders was lifted, and she could finally stand without support. Kirito changed Asuna in a very special way, for he didn’t remake her, but freed her from what held her back, so she is free to do as she wants.

The right which she denied herself for those 16 years of life was finally given to her by a mysterious boy in black.

Now we see her true colors. Despite the cold, hardened exterior she displayed in front of her subordinates and the bossy attitude she had, Asuna Yuuki is a 17 year old girl who behaves like one. Stubborn, emotional, a meddler, yet kind and accepting-- All in all, she is someone who shines brightly with youthful vigor. For the first time in game, and perhaps the first time in her life, she exposes her heart to someone, and becomes her true self without any restraints. For the following year, she gains true friends, and sleeps for more than 4 hours for the first time since the beginning of the death game.

It should come as no surprise that she eventually falls for him. For his kindness. For his strength. It’s not just that he helped her-- She finds his way of life to be so dazzling that she wants to continue to be guided by him, and protect him while he goes on his way. Kirito is more than just a brightly shining meteor that quickly fades away. His strength is something constant, something she knows she can depend on. Kirito could do what she could not. Not only was he infinitely stronger than her in many ways, he managed to remain reckless and free.

PROJECTED CLASS:
WARRIOR → PALADDIN

Seeing that Seven Titans is one of the most, if not the most known guild, she’ll naturally want to go see it first. Even though she’ll be hesitant about joining, the Scarlett Dragons are too similar to The Military in Aincrad, and none of the others appeal to her personally, she’ll ultimately join the Seven Titans. Seeing as you can use magic here, she’ll quickly want to learn how to use healing magic, in order to support her comrades and not let anyone die, but she’ll want to fight as well, so Paladdin seems like the right choice.

SAMPLES

FIRST PERSON SAMPLE:
Hello, my name is [ A beat. ] Asuna.

Is anyone here from Aincrad? [ For some reason, she feels the need to verify this, even if they should be. Everything is just too different. ] I don’t know if this is a special event or some sort, but there have been no rumours and I’ve never seen anything like it.

[ Then again, wouldn’t it be impossible for someone to report this if they got stuck here... ]

This object is also different, as far as I’m concerned, the user menu didn’t have this function. [ She trails off for a moment, panic setting in, although it’s not too visible. Who wouldn’t be shaken by something like this though? ]

Anyways, if anyone is kind enough to share whatever information they have, it’s appreciated.

THIRD PERSON SAMPLE
It shouldn’t be natural for a regular human being of a regular human world to know how to use a sword in this manner. Like a character directly out of an RPG, her movements are fluid and natural, as if she was born for this sort of dance, as if she had done so all of her life. From her stance to the slight twist in her wrist, it was all precise and perfect.

It’s only natural. This is the second time she’s had to hold onto an unfamiliar weapon. Except this time she’s not blinded by despair and has knowledge and experience. Fighting is a reflex instead of something she saw in movies and video game jargon is part of her everyday vocabulary. There’s no screaming and crying, only a stronger determination to escape.

Ah, but, there’s an undeniable sense of disappointment. How many more times is she going to go through this? She probably doesn’t have that much time, definitely not an entire year more to waste in a fictional land. So, why was fate being so cruel to her? She’s worked so hard, done so much, risen up to the challenge and fought for her escape-- Why did she have to be sent to another place, having to start from scratch again?!

“It was a great raid! We couldn’t have done it without you, Asuna ~”

“We should go train soon. There are some of you who are too sloppy.” The reply is curt, serious. There was nothing to be pleased about. Going there didn’t get them closer to finding a way to escape, nor did it level them up. Honestly? It was necesary, but there were other, more productive ways they could have achieved their goal.

It’s like they didn’t care about going back home.

Was she really the only one who thought of leaving?

mnemonics: (Default)

[personal profile] mnemonics 2013-05-06 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
PERSONALITY:
Sky Dolls, as a default, are given no real personality of their own. Their personality only exists on a chip. Noa is different. Because she was created differently, Noa has a personality of her own. While this difference is not actually easily seen in the comic (those personality chips must be damn good), it is told to us. Noa is a bubbly and social Sky Doll--she has no problems at all jumping into a crowd, and is perfectly happy to introduce herself to everyone in that crowd. She's a kind and gentle person who doesn't like to hurt anyone. She would much rather help everyone she can. Because of that, she'll sometimes do things that she doesn't necessarily want to do without (much) complaint, but she's still strong-willed. She doesn't let people push her around too much, but she does have a certain amount of give to verbal abuse, considering the industry she works in and what she is. It annoys her on the inside, but she'll just confront it with a smile and be as nice as always.

She does have a tendency to be a bit sarcastic, but this is usually shadowed by how bold she is. Noa will plunge headfirst in a situation without thinking twice about it, making her appear a bit ditzy because of her naivete in certain areas. But she's brave enough to tell her boss to his face that he's rude and just generally a terrible person. Noa will say what's on her mind, but she'll try and do it in the nicest way possible. Still, she's much more likely to be sarcastic and a bit bitchy to rude people. She hates rudeness!

Noa isn't totally naive, though. Since she manages herself and has control over her life more than any other Doll, she has a certain amount of street smarts. She generally doesn't get herself into terrible situations. She has enough sense to pick her masters carefully enough. None of them have been exactly in the running for the Nobel Peace Prize, but good enough.

The thing that Noa wants to know most is more about herself. She is living a relatively easy life and has friends, but she's unhappy in a lot of ways. She feels different from the other Dolls, and without her dreams of Agape, she has no way to explain them. It's just a feeling that she always has that she doesn't belong, that she's missing something. Other than those kinds of self-identification problems, Noa is very confident in herself. Obviously she has no physical flaws, but she's happy with who she is--she only wants to know why she is that way and how she came to be. Because of the Mnemonic Limiter, this is more than a little difficult, but she believes that the answers are waiting somewhere.

But speaking of belief, Noa doesn't have much in the way of spirituality. She understands the basics of the religion of Papathea, but doesn't know much about its workings. She has catered to clients in the church before, but they were only clients--she didn't really bother to get to the point where she understood their belief system. Noa doesn't really believe that she has a soul, since she's a Doll, but would like to. Like many of the more advanced dolls, Noa secretly wishes that she was "human" (the species of Papathea haven't been given a real name yet), but she also knows that it's impossible. It doesn't stop her from wishing.

Since Noa is so social, she is easily able to relate to other people and make friends. Since she's worked in the sex industry and other various industries that require a lot of interaction, she's very good at being open and tries to be non-judgmental. Her bubbly personality plays off of other social butterflies, but she is also persistent enough to try and make friends with more ornery and socially withdrawn characters. She really likes to be friendly!

This is especially easy because Noa isn't particularly opinionated about anything. Since her memories only last for an unknown amount of time (probably a little less than a year), she doesn't really have time to form her own opinions. That doesn't mean she isn't open to forming them or to learning in general. Noa is very eager to learn new things, and is one reason when she likes to change jobs so frequently. Getting to know new things is an exciting challenge for her. She's a Sky Doll of average intelligence with no real aptitude in one specific area, but has good operational knowledge spread across the board.

Noa gets emotional easily, and will freak out if she thinks something has gone bad, or be sad if something is remotely sad. She's a very emotional android, which the Sky Doll corporation would consider a flawed Doll. However, to anyone outside of her canon, these would just be signs of a "true," rather than programmed personality.

PROJECTED CLASS: Oracle. One of the central themes of Sky Doll is about Noa finding her identity, and she attempts to do so through spiritual means when she can. Because of her hyper-religious world, she's drawn to religion and finding meaning in spirituality, since it helps her understand herself. Not being a great fit for any of the other guilds, she would naturally gravitate towards a guild that could provide her a chance of understanding.

...Well! Um, this certainly isn't Papathea, but this isn't really what I had in mind when I asked for a vacation! I mean, when I asked God, if I could have a day off, he kind of mad not like that's unusual but I didn't think I'd get... I don't know, banished to a distant planet or something! That's what this is supposed to be, right? Oh, or it's a really good hologram simulation! Maybe?

[ She clasps her hands together like she's praying, smiling sheepishly at the camera. ]

If that's the case, I'm super sorry, God! Maybe the suggestion box was a little much, even if you should learn to take criticism a bit better! Oh, wait, you'll still be mad if I say something like that. Oops...

[ She smooshes her face a little in worry, but she immediately brightens, looking like she just remembered something. ]

Oh, I'm getting distracted! Just in case this goes to someone other than God, hi there! My name is Noa! I'm a Sky Doll! "It's not a real doll if it's not a Sky Doll," you know? Or, well, I was, but it seems like something fried my circuits a little bit... Which makes it surprising that I'm still operating normally, but there's no way I'm going to find a mechanic for diagnosti—Crap, I'm definitely blabbering now! Well, whatever, even if this is just a simulation, I'll do my best!! Now, to find that, um Godlings thing...

THIRD PERSON SAMPLE
It's strange, but it's wonderfully strange, too. She can't help but thing that, even though she knows she should be a little more frightened. But... She can't help it. She just feels different, in a way that she knows she couldn't explain well. All of the little blips of her sensors aren't functioning in the same way. The electricity isn't running through her circuits. Her internal clock isn't ticking down to her rewind time. She should have stopped functioning. But she hasn't.

And that's amazing.

She's managed to find The Godlings Sect after some trouble, but she can't muster up the courage to go in just yet. Instead, she's settled at the park in front of it on a bench. It's funny how odd the people here look, but she distinctly feels how different she is. No one has a tail, and their noses are so long...! But that makes her stick out like a sore thumb. She's heard a few people commenting on her tail especially as she had wandered around, which is why she's so nervous to go in.

...What if they don't want her? Then what is she supposed to do?

She presses the end of her tail against her lips with a pouting, but thoughtful gesture. It's no way to think, especially when so many things are going right for her, technically. She's been given a new chance to live without an owner and to just work without worrying about any of that. It's a happy thing, definitely! One hundred percent!

But she sighs, shoulders slumping.

She'll work her way up to it by the end of the day, right?

He keeps his home nice and neat and dust free, keeps up-to-date with his studies, and enjoys being in the company of his friends in the Shire.

Though, to some of the hobbits living around him, Frodo Baggins could very well be considered odd more so than not..

He's very open to adventure, which could be blamed by his Took background, or the adventures Bilbo Baggins told him about in stories, and even the pretend ones they would take around the Shire when Frodo was younger. When he was given the opportunity to travel to Rivendell with the One Ring (although it was mostly by fate, as he was made the next Ring-bearer by inheritance, anyway), he accepted, readying himself as fast as he could, and setting off with very few complaints. Though he runs into many obstacles to Rivendell, and even more past there, he can always make his way around it, or accept taking a different way, even though it could take up more of the company's time. Of course, doing so with the One Ring in your possession could make the adventure more hazardous, but Frodo knew this very well, and continued on anyway.

Despite leaving so quickly, and what others have maybe thought of him before, Frodo adores the Shire. Not much is said on how much he enjoyed living in Brandy Hall, but when his neighborhood was threatened after the Dark Lord Sauron managed to find who was in possession of his Ring and where, his care for the Shire was one of the first reasons for his leaving to Rivendell. So, compassionate is another trait that can easily describe Frodo. He cares about many things: from his home to his family, to his friends and to his past studies and tales of old. Even when it comes to more pitiful (yet suspicious...) creatures, he allows them the time and opportunity to prove themselves trustworthy.

This being said, he has shown to be a bit stubborn as well. Although, this could be blamed by him being affected by the One Ring making him more so than he usually is.

When you're on an adventure as important as this, it's good to be brave. While Frodo knows that he's rather insignificant (a hobbit, with barely any knowledge in fighting, and estimated to be about four feet tall), and isn't much help in regards to defending himself or others, he manages to stand up to whatever might get in his way, and instead finds a way to make way around the obstacle, instead of bowling through through it. Though, being the Ring-bearer, and coming back to the point of just about four feet (which is actually very high, for a hobbit), he is practically helpless, and much more dependent on the others he is with, rather than being independent.

Most importantly, though, he's very strong-willed. When taking the One Ring into Mondor, the will of the Ring was constantly battling against his own, and it slowly started to sap his strength, pushing himself to the limit- physically and mentally. Even when he's been poisoned by the blade of a Nazgul, he continues to show how much willpower he has ... which is strange, when it comes to hobbits. He continues to show this through his adventure, from the minute he laid down to sleep on the tough ground for the first time, and through the hot, barren wastelands of Mordor, where hope is as scarce as any other source of life.

Frodo can be all of these things ... but when he's tired, or when the Ring knows it's close to its destruction, or when a Nazgul on a fellbeast hovering by, he can be changed in more ways than one, usually negatively. When in possession of the One Ring, he can be selfish, stubborn (more so, anyway) and cold. However, he does not mean to be this way; that's how the Ring takes you over. Sometimes, no matter how much he tries to fight it, the will of the Ring can easily overcome his own.

His prime motivation is his friends. Without Sam, Merry, Pippin and the Fellowship, things would be much more difficult for him. Of course, traveling around the Middle-Earth by yourself would be awfully lonely, but when he grew tired or sick, they gave him kind words and offered help when they could, and even after separation they thought often of each other, hoping only the best for them.

Frodo also pulled a lot of motivation from the need to destroy the One Ring itself. It was a very dangerous artifact, even when not on the finger of the person it was made for. It corrupted minds, and would lead to nothing but trouble unless it was destroyed. He easily realized this, and that it had to be him who could destroy it. Once he destroyed it, his home would be safe, his friends and family would be safe, and Middle-Earth would be safe, for once you destroyed the Ring, it couldn't be remade.

PROJECTED CLASS: Academics - Scholar

Frodo is by no means a fighter. If anything, he tries to avoid getting into fights or confrontations as much as he can, even if it means taking more time to get to his destination. And when he was younger, Frodo enjoyed spending time with his uncle and learning more about old tales of Middle-earth, and about the other races and creatures there. Not only is learning and reading something he enjoys, but it would help him to feel more like a normal hobbit should. He doesn't feel right after agreeing to become the Ringbearer...and maybe, diving into something he once enjoyed can help him settle his mind, and help him feel like a normal hobbit should.

OTHER: Is it okay if Frodo has the Ring with him, even if Bilbo has it from another time? Is it okay for it to still be affecting him mentally, even if it can't turn him invisible if he wears it or anything like that?

THIRD PERSON SAMPLE:

In one of the rooms of the Guild of the Academics, a hobbit sat at his desk. To his left were dozens of pamphlets and scripts that were yellow and crinkled with age; to his left, a white piece of paper dotted with his own handwriting, and a feather pen that he held in his hand. The blinds were up enough to let in an appropriate amount of light, and the window was up enough to let in a little bit of a breeze. The door behind him was locked to ensure his privacy.

The only thing that could be heard was the light scratching of pen on paper. The sunlight shone through the window, turning the light-brown room golden. It was neat and tidy; not much could be seen hanging on the walls, other than the few things that had been there when Frodo arrived. The only thing that was a little cluttered was his desk. Books and papers were starting to stack, but the little figure hardly paid it any mind. His attention stayed concrete on the work in front of him.

Everything that had happened to him within the past few weeks was still rather difficult for him to wrap his head around. It wasn't every other day where you woke up in a strange land with different people and characters alike. Why, it had been difficult in Middle-earth not knowing the road that lay ahead of you, let alone what was to happen here! Frodo's agenda was much, much different from that of a normal hobbit's anymore.

But, according to some of his neighbors in Hobbiton, Frodo Baggins wasn't exactly a normal hobbit.

The name of Baggins had once been very respectable in the Shire. A Baggins was proper and on time. A Baggins was polite and orderly. A Baggins never went on any adventures or did anything unexpected. But by the time Frodo moved in with his uncle all those many years ago, the once-respected name had changed quite a bit. Many hobbits thought of his Uncle Bilbo as odd, questionable, and some even thought he was a ghost. Once Frodo started to follow in Bilbo's footsteps, some of these rumors and such were passed onto him.

That wasn't exactly how he wasn't 'normal', though. Not anymore.

Frodo got to his feet and stretched. He looked to his window....and shut the blinds. He then covered his notes and the pamphlets, and checked to make sure the door was closed. And when all was safe, he pulled out from underneath his shirt a tiny golden ring.

Though it may seem ordinary to some, it was nothing but an ordinary ring. It was the Ring of Power, the very ring designed by the Dark Lord Sauron himself. It was evil upon all evils. It was the one thing that would either bring peace to Middle-earth, or lead it to ruin. And it was Frodo's responsibilty to carry it to the very place where it was forged, so it could be destroyed forever.

It spoke to Frodo. It whispered evil things to his ears, spoke in a language that no Hobbit or Man should ever hear. For every time he resisted its lure, it harmed him, like putting a burning brand against his skin...against his very soul........

His hand closed against the little ring that hung on its chain, and his thoughts began to wander. It was seeking for a way back home, where it could be reunited with its Master. In this odd world, its Master was nowhere close, and there was nothing to aid it. Frodo could feel the anger seeping from the Ring into his own skin, and his hand clenched around it tighter. It was a low, seething kind of anger that set his teeth on edge. How dare he be pulled from his quest? Did they not know the importance of what he was dealing with? If someone were to claim the Ring, would they know what danger they would put themselves into?

.......No. Frodo pushed back against the odd feelings, and started to open his hand. His fingers stayed tight in their position, like they were fighting against him, but his grip on the Ring slowly started to loosen. Whether or not he was in Hobbiton, Middle-earth, or even Goldvale, he must stay strong. For everybody's safety.

His hand let go of the Ring then, and settled back down to his side. The hobbit took a small breath of air, before looking listlessly up to the wall ahead of him, lost in his own thoughts. A few moments later, he opened the blinds and unlocked the door, and returned to his seat at his desk. Frodo uncovered the paper, and continued again.

The language was much harder for him to learn than Elvish. He had no previous history with whatever was being deciphered before him, and hardly any mentor like Uncle Bilbo. But after a minute or two, Frodo shut his eyes, and thought of the days when he was a young lad, spending evening upon evening studying with Bilbo in his study. He could imagine the older hobbit sitting beside him, having him write the letters, saying the words, bit by bit. Ga-lad. Gilth-on-ie-l.

Frodo found himself doing the same; running one hand over the words in front of him, the other scribbling down the notes as the puzzle began to fit into place. He imagined Bilbo standing beside him, muttering 'Good, lad! Good!

A smile slowly found itself onto Frodo's face, and a tear slipped down his cheek.

NAME: Gandalf the Grey, Mithrandir, Tharkûn, Olórin, Stormcrow, etc etc
CANON: The Hobbit | Lord of the Rings
CANON POINT: January 25, T.A. 3019, After the Battle of the Peak
AGE: Ancient, his body however is around 2,019 years old despite only looking like he's in his 60s.
APPEARANCE:

full body: http://i.imgur.com/X5sgz3v.jpg
PERSONALITY: '...an old man with a staff. He had a tall pointed blue hat, a long grey cloak, a silver scarf over which a white beard hung down below his waist, and immense black boots.'
- Bilbo, (The Hobbit, "An Unexpected Party")

To the casual eye of anyone who doesn't know the wizard, Gandalf looks much like an old man and most tend to believe him nothing more than a simple conjurer. Some call him a troublemaker, as at times trouble tends to follow him like winter follows autumn. Due to this he's been called Stormcrow by some. Of course it isn't really that he brings trouble, more that he sweeps in to warn people of approaching trouble, since forewarned is forearmed.

Gandalf is for the most part rather dedicated to his duty to Middle-earth, guarding it and it's various people as best as it is possible for one man to oversee such a large body of land. Fortunately, he wasn't alone in his duty, but he was the most active in the fact that he never settled for overlong in any one location; choosing to wander the Westlands and 'stick his nose' in places where it oft 'didn't belong' according to some.

"A wizard is never late, nor is he early, he arrives precisely when he means to."
-Gandalf (The Fellowship of the Ring)

In some ways, the wizard acted much akin to a feline, going where he would, where he felt he was needed or desired to go, despite being told to curtail such actions at times when people felt he was being too nosy. He kept his own counsel on some things, often wanting to learn more before dragging other people into the subject. Of course, he was just as prone to drag people into things he felt needed to be addressed...without actually informing them of his true intentions behind his actions. (re: The quest of Erebor)

Gandalf did however know when and how to relax. He spent much time in the Shire, visiting the hobbits, taking to smoking the pipe-weed that they grew and smoked themselves. He admired them their courage and humble nature. He often entertained them at parties they held via the fireworks he made and the tales of things beyond the Shire.

Gandalf can appear to be rather mirthful and humorous at times, jesting with and teasing those in his company. Of course, the wizard is just as apt to show his temper should something provoke it. His anger doesn't last long fortunately, especially as most that do cause his temper to flare often repent their foolishness shortly after seeing it. When he's angry or fighting in combat with an enemy, he also seems to lose the mien of being a simple wanderer or conjurer and become something far greater and considerably more threatening.

Gandalf often can surprise people with the impatience he displays for other people's nonsense, especially when time is of the essence. Act foolish and you'll likely get a scolding from him, of course, he was not above rewarding people when he thought it was deserved.

Gandalf's deep wisdom may be derived from the patience he learned while in Valinor, just as his care for all creatures of 'good will' most likely came from his sense of pity for the weak. Both his patience and sense of pity were revealed again and again both in books and movies, even when dealing with the servants of his enemies.

"Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgment. For even the very wise cannot see all ends."
—Gandalf (Book One: Chapter II)

PROJECTED CLASS: Knight
I went with Knight for Gandalf, because of the skills, they felt like they fit him well and the fact he fights more with staff and sword than with magic also made me lean toward this class. Another reason would be due to the high defense. Considering he already knows how to fight with his staff, I wager it wouldn't be all that hard for him to learn how to use a lance. Also he's the sort of person who would seek to defend his allies and thus play tank given a choice. (re: balrog in moria anyone?)

OTHER: Gandalf is one of the Istari. Originally, the Istari were angelic Maiar spirits, sent by the Valar to aid Middle-earth in its struggle against evil; but in Middle-earth they were forbidden to use their Maiar powers. The "magic" they wielded was the power that occurred only in the mortal world, and therefore they were given human bodies, that restricted their spiritual and physical strength. Due to his being around during the creation of Arda, I've set his age to Ancient and also listed the age of his body as well.

He had not expected to awake in the living world again, at least not still as he once had been. But awake he did, suddenly and all at once, like a man who was surfacing from water and in desperate need of air. His lungs drew in air and confusion settled even further in due to the lack of biting chill within the air that entered them. While it was entirely possible that his body had been fetched from the peak of Celebdil and taken to a more friendly locale, he did not know the room he woke in now.

Turning himself over, he pushed himself up to his feet and took silent stock of himself. The first thing which came to mind was the obvious lack of his staff, but then it had broken on the bridge. He noted the loss of his other belongings, most likely lost in his descent and fight against the Balrog. He still had his sword and Narya. It was as he was staring at the ring that he noted one other thing missing. The power he had wielded previous to his falling to his injuries from the Balrog was gone, nary a whisper or hint of it remaining. Neither did the ring have any power to it even. He frowned silently, worry and perhaps a touch of fear now creeping in to mingle with his previous confusion.

The loss of his own power didn't worry him nearly as much as the ring's loss of power, unless perhaps it meant that that Ring had been destroyed finally. It would be a relief if that was the case but still, the worry lingered regardless since he didn't know yet if that was the case or not.

At least he was not completely unarmed, he still possessed Glamdring. He would be capable enough with it to put most who might seek to attack him to flight with it.

Turning his attention from himself now, to the room which held him once again, his gaze shortly fell upon two men standing not too far from him, their attire was nothing he'd ever seen before which hinted that he was no where near Middle-Earth before they actually spoke up welcoming him to a world completely different from his own.

The only thing he could get out of the men was the name of the world and the advice to leave and find himself a guild to join during his time here. Attempting to press them for more availed him not, so he finally departed the castle he had woken in to look at the city around it.

NAME: Sui
CANON: Café 0 ~The Drowned Mermaid~
CANON POINT: Post-game (the game does have different routes, but due to the nature of his character his continuity includes all of them)
AGE: Unknown
APPEARANCE: Here.

PERSONALITY:
"Sir, how can you be happy all the time?"
"I'm neither happy nor sad."
If there's one thing that can be said for Sui, it's that he's unlikely to make a bad first impression. Unless, of course, you have an intrinsic problem with someone smiling quite pleasantly at you.

Eventually, though, you'll realize that he never stops smiling. They're all pleasant enough expressions in theory, but it's gotten to the point where his smiles clearly have moods: the threatening ones are just as eloquent as the polite ones. He's just as likely to speak gently wearing one as he is to insult you, even if his insults, too, are couched so carefully you wouldn't be able to tell where courtesy stopped and jibes began.
"Think of it as using your own head. Oh, my apologies. You don't have your head with you right now."
In other words, he's an old hand at professional courtesy (he is a waiter, after all), but he's also old enough of a hand that the veneer of politeness over exasperation is at times quite thin. It gets much thinner if you aren't officially a client, in fact. Moreover, he's stated quite baldly that overall there isn't much meaning or feeling behind it -- while he's not entirely detached he's certainly somewhat removed from the general relationship disaster that is his canon. It's not surprising, however: he's been at his job so long that even Sui himself either no longer remembers very clearly or simply refuses to comment on just how long it really has been. Spend that long watching over the human folly of countless lingering ghosts and you'll have seen, if not everything, at least a good sampling of it.
"I won't forgive him. Ever!"
"..."
"My lady, won't you regret it?"

"Do you think I will?"
"..."
"Farewell, sir."
While Sui has a certain measure of silver tongue, he doesn't make any effort further than pleasant language to soften his opinion when he gives it. And he does give it -- he clearly has his own thoughts on Marin's various choices and characteristics throughout the different routes, even if he never does impose those views. His role is simply to watch over his clients as they learn to move on, and while he takes to that task with enthusiasm -- stalkerish enthusiasm, in fact -- he seems experienced enough not to become too invested in their trials and tribulations. Humans tend to die in the strangest and stupidest ways, after all, and when you're working in a café for the dead you get quite an excellent front row seat.

And while it's certain that Sui takes his job seriously -- he never completely lost his patience with Marin even through the six (or perhaps more) iterations of her last days -- it's just as evident that he does find a certain enjoyment in poking his nose into other people's business. He is implied never to have left Marin's side, even during some of the less-than-worksafe portions of the game. On the other hand, it speaks volumes for his ability to step back from his clients that he never once stepped in as she went about getting herself manipulated and killed over and over and over again. Even with the stipulation that this was her inevitable fate, it takes a special kind of sang-froid to watch such things happen so many times and continue to not bat an eyelash.
"My lady..."
"Sir, do you know that a desire is like a whirlpool?"
"It swallows everything around it, without any exception."
"And that desire... is me."
"As you wish, young lady."
"Thank you for visiting Café 0."
His composure in the face of human misfortune also says plenty about his morals -- or the general colorlessness thereof. Of course, his ability to see all sides of the issue (trainwreck of issues, frankly) means that he has uncommon understanding of the motives behind even the worst excesses his clients and those involved with them can get up to. Thanks at least partly to this understanding, he never seems to pass judgment upon either Marin or her antagonists. He acknowledges that even her desire to wreak bloody vengeance on those who have wronged her from beyond the grave is her own choice -- one form of 'moving on'. It seems there is no 'accepted' form of moving on in this instance, as the only mission given by the Café appears to involve getting his clients off the streets, so to speak.

Of Sui's own wishes, however, we learn very little. He is notably closemouthed about his background, how he came to be a waiter, and any other intimations on the subject. In fact, a great deal of the smiling threats he delivers involve either aspersions on his ability to pretend courtesy or doubts about his fitness as a waiter. There are hints, however, that he remembers very well where he came from and how he came to work at the Café. Removing him from his comfortable position outside life, reality and time itself will certainly give his composure a bit of a shake; perhaps enough for him to finally get off the sidelines.
"How fortunate for you to forget the painful memories you have experienced in your lifetime."

PROJECTED CLASS: Shaman. Sui is absolutely not a physical fighter; his job involves being invisible and following people around being nosy or generally using magic presumably given to him as an employee of Café 0. Moreover, he works with the dead so ending up using them in battle is a natural logical progression, of course. He wouldn't be fazed by the more problematic aspects at least, or really anything about the class.

OTHER: N/A

SAMPLES
FIRST PERSON SAMPLE: 1 & 2 & 3

THIRD PERSON SAMPLE: Sui is decidedly no stranger to odd and fantastic voyages; ordinary as most of his clients are, the commonest of the common folk, even they have their own strange little corners of the universe to show for it.

It's been quite some time, however, since he last found himself transported against his will. As much as its clients are at its mercy (so to speak), the Café's employees are at least given their own measure of freedom to carry out their duties.

The choice of destination is no more comprehensible than the way he arrived (on his feet, opening his eyes with the impression of waking from sleep; odd, since he doesn't usually need much of that, if at all).

He had, of course, approached the nearest people who looked vaguely like they might belong there -- that is, no one dressed very much like anyone from the last place where he'd worked.

He knows the value of the help, after all; quite aside from the fact that venturing into a dubious castle after such a dubious journey isn't his style at all.

He's learned very little indeed -- unfortunate if unsurprising -- even if he has received a few trinkets to make up for it. It's nothing short of amusing, because what he's lost cannot be measured, he thinks, even by the standards of this strange land.

But that's quite all right.

He's found something better: by accident, as these things happen, on the way to that guild for warriors none can seem to get out of earshot. It's as far from the place for him as it is possible to be, but Sui has never been one to pass up the opportunity to have his own look at something. You never do know, after all. What he finds instead is the entertainment district: perhaps it's because the Café is always so far from bustling, but he has a particular ear for the dulcet tones of life and its enjoyment.

The Performers' Guild, as it happens, is inviting by sheer virtue of being -- he has only to follow the music and chatter of the crowd to their common epicenter. One cannot miss arriving, particularly when the doors are thronged and thrown open.

It is, of course, his cue to turn to the nearest available bystander.

"Pardon me." His smile is genial and laced with expectation. Surely you know this much, just being here. "I haven't seen such a lively crowd in a long time. Today wouldn't happen to be a holiday of some kind, would it?"
